When one endeavors to change social ideas or one works on a serious humanitarian project,
one learns that people are essential.
Without people the whole idea is flawed from the outset.
People are indispensable to an organisation.

Marto's Big Ride!!!
14th June, 2010

Hi everyone,

Thanks for looking me up on the Big Heart Project website.  It is true that I plan to cycle from Melbourne to Brisbane in 21 days (give or take a couple of days!)  Your support would be greatly appreciated, as my purpose for doing this is to support the Big Heart Project schools that are currently in operation and need to be sustained and developed, and further, to help raise enough money to build their proposed safe house facility where victims of human trafficking, child prostitution, domestic violence and destitution can start a new life in a caring environment. In this facility all these individuals will have access to different therapies and micro-finance loans to get them started in a new life. Definitely something worth supporting. Offer us a donation and you can expect good karma heading your way very soon!

I became aware of the Big Heart Project through my housemate Kathryn who was appointed the director of fund-raising and events shortly after moving in with us.  Soon afterwards I met the founder of the organisation Adrian, and through conversations with him I became inspired to contribute somehow. An epic bike ride to Brisbane stood out as my own unique way of helping out.  Before I go into details about the trip here is a quick summary about me:

I went through my schooling years and discovered my interest in psychology and in adventuring.  I would spend some of my weekends exploring the bush either on foot or on my squeaky K-Mart quality bicycle. As an undergraduate in Psychology I spent many holidays camping, trekking, going on long-distance bike rides, then after graduating, I spent a year and a half travelling around Australia taking on odd jobs such as construction and as a bicycle courier.  My next career move wasn’t clear until I finally got a permanent job in Melbourne as an outreach worker for criminals who had an intellectual disability.  I also enrolled in a Masters of Social Work at Melbourne University.

I am currently on my last university field placement which will end in late May.  Cycling to Brisbane will be a poetic way to end this chapter of my life.  The next chapter will hopefully consist of hitting the world travel scene and some intrepid style volunteer work. I also plan to pursue a career as a clinician or researcher in the area of child/adolescent development.

I am happy to have met those involved in the Big Heart Project as they have stirred up a philanthropic side to me, which has discovered a way of putting adventuring to good use. It is a very young grass roots organization, which was created by a small group of inspiring individuals.  My bike ride is simply one of the events to help lift this organization off the ground and help it become more widely acknowledged by the public, especially those who are interested in offering their own unique contribution.  The Big Heart Project has plans to continue expanding to help a world in need and yet remain small enough that administration costs and complicated bureaucratic processes don’t place a smoke screen before its goals.  If you are interested in making a donation, you can do so on this website or by contacting Big Heart Project for more details.

The members of this organization have the best intentions at heart but need your help in order to put those intentions into practice.  Finally the money raised will help to inspire and motivate me to put everything I have into my bike ride which will also act as a broadcasting tool to spread the word of the Big Heart Project as I slog it out up the east coast of Australia.

Yours Truly,

Marto
